PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics
As part of the Faculty of Mathematics, the Biomathematics Group offers also courses for the PhD program in Mathematics and its members are glad to discuss potential PhD topics with any potential candidate.
Before you start the enrollment in the doctoral program in Mathematics, you should contact a potential supervisor at the Biomathematics Group (i.e., any professor of the group or any member of the group having an Austrian Habilitation), namely:

The courses of the University of Vienna for which PhD students in Mathematics can obtain ECTS credits are the advanced courses for the Master's program in Mathematics. The choice of courses for the doctoral program has to be specified individually in the "dissertation agreement" (Dissertationsvereinbarung) with the PhD advisor(s) at the start of the doctoral studies and has to be confirmed by the head of the PhD studies.
Further details about the PhD program in Mathematics can be found on the website of the StudentServiceCenter (SSC) of the Faculty of Mathematics. The SSC is the main contact for all questions regarding matriculation and registration to courses.
The Vienna School of Mathematics
The Vienna School of Mathematics (VSM) is a joint mathematical doctoral school of the University of Vienna and of TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology)
The VSM organizes mini-workshop, summer/winter schools, and training courses for its members.
Firstly, students have to enroll in the PhD studies in Mathematics; at this point they can also request to join the Vienna School of Mathematics.
- The membership of the VSM is automatic for students who are hired on praedoc positions directly financed by the VSM;
- for all other doctoral students in mathematics (i.e., University Assistant praedocs as well as praedocs hired in research projects), membership is possible and highly advisable: in this case the membership of the VSM can be requested following recommendation from the respective PhD advisor.
