Bachelor's programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and courses suggested for Bachelor's students interested in biomathematics

The Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna currently offers 4 bachelor programmes:

• Bachelor of Science in Mathematics;
• Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Foundations of Data Science;
• Bachelor of Education with teaching subject Mathematics;
• Bachelor of Education with teaching subject Descriptive Geometry.

Further details about all the 4 Bachelor's programmes can be found on the website of the Student Service Mathematics (SSC). The SSC is the main contact for all questions regarding matriculation and registration to courses.

If you are interested in learning also some topics of biomathematics during your bachelor studies, you shall enroll in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

The curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is divided in the following parts:

(1) During the first three semesters, the core modules (a total of 90 ECTS credits) provide students with content-related and methodological foundations, as well as mathematical ways of thinking and expressing themselves, thus equipping them with the essential tools for all further courses. All core modules must therefore be completed in order to complete the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

(2) The foundational modules (a total of 50 ECTS) are fundamental for further specialization in various areas; from the seven elective modules offered, students must choose five modules to take.

(3) The specialization modules (a total of 30 ECTS) offer students a broader range of choices, from advanced mathematical topics to highly application-oriented subjects: From this group, elective modules totaling 30 ECTS credits must be selected according to the available offerings. Here, it is also possible to replace 15 ECTS credits with an extension curriculum. 

With prior approval from the programme director, modules from the foundational modules that were not chosen for (2) can also be used as specialization modules.

(4) The curriculum concludes with the Bachelor's seminar (10 ECTS), within which a Bachelor's thesis must also be written.

Please note that some courses of the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics are held only in German.

As part of the 30 ECTS in the part (3), students can choose the specialization module "Biomathematics and Game Theory" (BIO module), which offers 5 ECTS. This course can be taken only after having taken the following courses:

• "Introduction to Mathematical Work" (StEOP);
• Compulsory module "Analysis 2" (AN2);
• Compulsory module "Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science" (DMTI);
• Compulsory module "Integration and Stochastics" (IST).

It is also recommended to have taken the following courses before starting with "Biomathematics and Game Theory":

• "Introduction to Higher Mathematics" (EHM);
• "Probability theory and Basic Principles of Statistics" (WT).

With the course on "Biomathematics and Game Theory", students acquire particular expertise on the main concepts and models in biomathematics (e.g., evolutionary theory, genetics, ecology, epidemiology, systems biology) and/or game theory (e.g., prisoner's dilemma, zero-sum games, and mini-max, Nash equilibrium, evolutionary game theory).

We are available to supervise Bachelor theses, even if you do not plan to later pursue a Master's degree in mathematics with a focus on biomathematics.

Any academic staff member holding a PhD or Dr. degree is eligible to serve as a supervisor for a Bachelor thesis.

There is no predefined set list of topics available for Bachelor theses: if you are interested in writing a Bachelor thesis with a topic in biomathematics, please simply contact one of the members of the Biomathematics Group (faculty members, independent project leaders, and postdocs).
